What? Who? Where? Why?

KCC is a local group of kayakers and canoeist (although our canoeist are few!) from the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui region. We've been jumping in our boats and looking for paddling ops since the 1970's.

We have a range of abilities within the club with some paddlers having more than 30 years whitewater experience, whilst others are just in their first season. We run some beginner/introductory river trips and are keen to help you get the most out of paddling. Our members can be found scattered across the best rivers throughout the year, and not just on sunny days either... the Kaimai Ranges at the back of Tauranga provide some of the best flood runs around for the more advanced paddler.

Our members are also involved in the competitive sports of Canoe Polo and Whitewater Slalom.

George and Margaret, the nice people who own the paddock where we take out at the bottom of the Wairoa, are selling up. Well it may appear that way from the Real Estate signs in the paddock this season. Actually they have been trying for some years to get the fine upstanding folk who represent us citizens at the Western Bay District Council, you know, His Worshipness the Mayor and his buddies, to buy the rights. They’ve put it on the market, even gone to Auction now, to jolly  the council boys into doing something.

Let’s face it, not everybody is as sharing and caring about us white water folk, as George and Margaret, who round up the cows to let us all through every flow day, and no prizes for guessing there ain’t too many dollars going in that honesty box. What would we do if they charged $5 apiece like the midway owners, get out at Poropori Road?  Anyway, word has it from my informant at WBoPDC that negotiations are happening. Last I heard from George, they’re a long way apart on a price. So if anybody knows anybody at WBoPDC, be sure to drop into conversation how handy that paddock is, and the joys of paddling that last section from the whirly-whirly down.
